The first NFT concert ticket
A content-unlock site for Citizen Cope's Verifiable Genesis NFT, which sold as the most expensive concert ticket ever.
Background
Musician Citizen Cope, working with ConsenSys's decentralized identity team Serto, wanted to release a genesis NFT that was more than a picture. It bundled a one-of-a-kind reference master remix of "Something To Believe In" with a VIP front-row experience for four at City Winery in New York. The NFT was the ticket.
What I built
The custom content-unlock site. Present the NFT from your wallet, prove you hold it, and the gated content and the VIP details unlock. The NFT itself was issued against Citizen Cope's decentralized identity, so anyone can verify the artist actually made it, no matter which marketplace it ends up on.
It auctioned on OpenSea on April 30, 2021 for 7.7777 ETH, around $23,000 at the time, which made it the most expensive concert ticket ever sold. Sweet!
Things I learned
- Wallet-gated content is simple in theory and full of edge cases in practice: which chain, which wallet, what if they transfer it mid-show?
- Verifiable authorship matters more for music than for art. Fakes are cheap to make.
- A single 1-of-1 with a real-world perk beats a thousand JPEGs for telling the story.
