Articulated Weedle

My son's favorite Pokemon, designed by me using Nomad sculpt for the first time

Background

My son wanted a Weedle toy. None exist so I took it as a chance to try out Nomad design. A 3D clay-like mesh modeler that runs on the iPad. It seemed simple at first but has quite a steep learning curve that I'm still trying to get over.

Assembly

These pieces were all printed in different colors and then I used an elastic band through the middle to make the whole design articulated.

Things I Learned

  1. The first Weedle I printed had a round center hole for the elastic so the parts rotated around in ways nature does not allow. In my second attempt I created a rectangular hole for the elastic and used a wide elastic band. This helped but it made it harder to secure the elastic on either end.
  2. Hot glue is for the impatient, but sometimes patience is necessary when gluing toys. I would probably not use hot glue again and come up with a different way to secure and hide the elastic on the nose and tail of the toy.

Just one printing issue on the first one...
